Yang (Simon) Guo

Short Bio

I am a Data Science professional based in Toronto, Ontario. I recently obtained my M.Sc in Statistics degree from University of Victoria (UVic), co-supervised by Dr. Xuekui Zhang and Dr. Li Xing.

Before that, I studied at Huazhong Agricultural University (HZAU), culminating in a B.Eng. degree in Computer Science, and graduating on the Outstanding Graduates List.

I am broadly interested in big data analytics, data mining, and machine learning.

Research

Working closely with health data, my research work focuses on the cross-disciplinary applications of machine learning and the development of efficient and accurate data mining algorithms and software packages.

Experience

• Master Student@University of Victoria (2019.9 - 2021.7)
  I worked on developing relevant machine learning algorithms and software to solve big data problems, with a focus on health informatics and data mining. I was also a trainee of the Visual and Automated Disease Analytics (VADA) training program, where I undergone trainings on translating complex health data into insights that can be used to improve the health of populations and support health professional decision making.


• Undergraduate RA@Huazhong Agricultural University (2016.12 - 2019.6)
  I did research in probabilistic graphical models (PGMs, specifically, Bayesian networks) and swarm intelligence algorithms (genetic algorithm, simulated annealing, and other heuristic optimization methods like particle swarm optimization, artificial bee colony) with Prof. Jianxiao Liu. I was also actively involved in a state-funded research project that mines biological datasets for genes related to maize carotenoid components.


• Intern Programmer@National Key Laboratory of Crop Genetic Improvement (2017.2 - 2017.11)
  I was in charge of constructing and maintaining the registration website and database for Agricultural Genomics 2017, which is a Nature conference.


• Undergraduate Visiting Student@The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (2017.7 - 2017.8)
  I focused on learning the fundamental knowledge for IoT, Big data and cloud computing. I attended several lectures including: Research and Application of Knowledge Management in Industrial Systems; IoT Frontier Technology and Commercial Applications; Research and application of Big Data; Best Practices for Cloud Computing.
